Jayden Stockley: I told Pape Souare you had a whole goal to aim for and you’ve hit it towards me!

Jayden Stockley made it ten goals in all competitions this term as he bagged his second of the 4-0 FA Cup rout against Havant & Waterlooville on Saturday – but left-back Pape Souare may have had something to say about that strike.

The Senegalese international had prodded a rebound off the crossbar back towards the empty net but an instinctive touch from Stockley meant the forward could claim the goal rather than his teammate.

“He was devastated,” explained Stockley, with a rueful smile.

“I said: ‘Pape you had a whole goal to aim for and you’ve hit it towards me, of course I’m going to stick my foot out!’ I was just hoping it wasn’t offside because then he would have had a reason to be really angry.

“He’s got the biggest smile ever, he was happy for me. I was desperate to play in the game today because I saw it as a chance to hopefully get some goals. As a striker you want to be out there every minute when there’s goals to be had.

“It’s nice to get to 10 [goals] now. I’ve got my eyes fully set on a season of big numbers and hopefully contributing to a team that’s successful.”

The National League South Hawks had kept Charlton at bay for 72 minutes before Josh Davison finally settled home nerves with the opener. The Addicks then added a further three goals in the closing stages to secure safe passage through to round two.

Stockley added: “I’ve been a part of a lot of games like that. It was a credit to Havant, they put a lot of men behind the ball, probably looking to take it to a replay. Which you look to avoid, especially if you’ve got a home tie.

“They were very professional and put a lot of men behind the ball. It’s a different task to what we’ve been asked a lot of times this season. A lot of front-foot games. It was a test that took us a while to get the better of but once the first went in, it got enjoyable like that.”
