Jed Steer could pick up TWO play-off winners medals – if Charlton Athletic and Aston Villa do the business

Jed Steer could end up being handed two play-off winners medals this season – as the former Charlton Athletic loanee starred for Aston Villa in midweek.

The 26-year-old goalkeeper saved two penalties in Tuesday night’s penalty shootout win over West Bromwich Albion.

Former Crystal Palace captain Mile Jedinak was one of four successful spot-kick conversions by Dean Smith’s side as they secured their place at Wembley – and a crack at winning promotion to the Championship.

But Steer also made 20 appearances for Charlton this season, 19 of those in League One, after signing in early August.

Villa had a recall option in the January window and opted to bring the former Norwich stopper back to the Midlands.

Steer has played 18 times for his parent club in the current campaign.

Addicks boss Lee Bowyer watched the Villa-West Brom tie. 

“He did well,” said the Charlton manager. “I bet he got their hearts in their mouths at times with some of his distribution!

“But on the positive side he did well with his two penalty saves, that alone got them through to the final.

“It just shows how much Marsh [Andy Marshall, goalkeeper coach] did with him. It’s not just his penalty saves – he has gone back there and become their number one.

“And he deserves it, because for any player going out on loan it can be difficult for them.

“He came here with a great attitude, worked hard and now he has got his reward.”
