Joachim Andersen receives death threats and abusive messages after Darwin Nunez red card

Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen has revealed that he received 300-400 abusive messages on social media after Darwin Nunez was sent off for headbutting the Danish centre-back in the 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Monday night.

Referee Paul Tierney sent the Uruguayan striker off in the 57th minute at Anfield for headbutting Andersen during an off-the-ball incident.

Nunez, who arrived from Benfica in the summer for £80million and scored on his Premier League debut last weekend in the 2-2 draw with Fulham, was making his first appearance at home for the Reds.

Andersen was marking Nunez, but the forward grew frustrated with the 26-year-old centre-back throughout the match.

But after the game, Andersen shared messages he had received on social media.

He said on Instagram: “Got maybe 3-400 of these messages last night.

“I understand you support a team but have some respect and stop act tough online.”

He added: “Hope Instagram and the Premier League do something about this.”

It has been reported that the Premier League is aware of the abuse Andersen has received and will be offering their support.

Also, the Eagles will support Andersen through this matter and will help him report the abuse to the police.

Speaking about the red card to Viaplay after the game, Andersen said: “The whole game, I sat really close to him – I annoyed him a lot and did well against him.

“I think that’s why he was angry with me.

“He headbutted me, the first one, at a cross, and I told him he shouldn’t do that.

“I was angry with him. Then he did it again, which, for me, is really stupid, so it’s a clear red card.”
