Joe Carnall and Laurence Bloom leave Millwall roles – with ex-Charlton sports science head joining Cambridge United

Millwall have confirmed the departures of technical coach Joe Carnall and head of performance Laurence Bloom.

Bloom has taken on the same role he performed with the Lions at Cambridge United.

Carnall has worked under Millwall manager Gary Rowett in an analysis role at Birmingham City, Derby County and Stoke City.

He joined the South Londoners when Rowett was appointed as Neil Harris’ successor in October 2019.

“He has stepped down from his position to pursue new opportunities in the future,” said Millwall in a statement on their website.

Carnall, talking to the South London Press in November 2019, said: “With Gary it just clicked. It was almost an instant thing. We share the same philosophies of how we like the game to be played, what we look for in players and what the team should look like from a tactical point of view.

“The passion Gary has for the role I had [at previous clubs] – in terms of buying into the analysis – and how he integrated me at the time from a tactical point of view into games and team selection – the input and responsibility he gave to me – was empowering.”

Bloom arrived at Millwall in June 2016. He had been a sports science consultant at Nottingham Forest for six months after more than four-and-a-half years as head of sports science at Charlton Athletic.

“He has been an integral member of staff throughout his six years, helping with the overall effort of consolidating the Lions in the top half of the Championship in recent campaigns,” said Millwall’s statement.

“Everyone at the club would like to wish both Carnall and Bloom, who is joining Cambridge United, the very best of luck in the future careers, and thank them for their outstanding efforts, commitment, and professionalism throughout their respective time with Millwall.”
