Joe Pigott happy with half-century goal haul for Dons – but warns they are not safe yet

BY KAI BENNETT

Joe Pigott was delighted to go past the half-century goal mark for AFC Wimbledon but reckons they are still not safe from the League One drop.

The Dons are third in a form guide for the last six matches and thrashed Swindon 4-1 at Plough Lane on Saturday afternoon.

Pigott scored a brace and started the scoring with a well-taken penalty in the 20th minute and then rounded off a great win by adding a fourth goal just before the hour mark.

Wimbledon have scored 12 goals in their last three games to move five points clear of the relegation zone.

Pigott told the club’s website: “It’s another great performance from the boys. Obviously we’re really pleased, but our feet are firmly on the ground.

“There’s five more games now and hopefully we can continue this great run. But we’re still not out of it [the relegation battle], so we need to keep up the hard work and hit the levels we’ve been hitting.”

Pigott has scored 19 goals this season for the Dons and has 51 in total.

“That’s massive [hitting fifty goals],” he said. “I was actually thinking about it the other day when I was on 49. So to hit it on Saturday was brilliant. It’s a really nice achievement.

“When I came here, I scored with pretty much my first touch and I had no idea that I’d go on to hit 50 goals. There’s been a few nice goals in there too.”

Pigott praised Will Nightingale after he scored in back-to-back games.

“I’m buzzing for Will. He’s been different class and he’s scored two goals in two games. Especially that header today, it was fantastic. He’s been superb recently.”
