Johnnie Jackson has only one gripe after Charlton’s 4-0 win over Doncaster Rovers

Johnnie Jackson admitted the only complaint he could have after Charlton’s 4-0 win over Doncaster Rovers today was that his side did not convert more of their chances.

The Addicks climbed out of the League One relegation zone on goal difference as Jackson, in caretaker charge following the departure of Nigel Adkins, made it back-to-back victories.

Elliot Lee, Conor Washington, Jayden Stockley and Ben Purrington scored for Charlton as they comfortably swatted aside Doncaster.

Jackson said: “It was a really good performance. We created a lot of chances and limited them to very few. Our shape looked good, we pressed very well and played for the shirt – which is everything I’ve been asking for.

“We probably should’ve scored more goals, that is my one negative takeaway, if you can call it a negative.

“I’m not amazed [at the reaction]. I know what that group is capable of. We know we’ve been underperforming. But I thought I could definitely get a tune out of them – starting with that graft and hard work that I’ve been banging on about. They are probably sick of hearing about it but I’m not going to stop, because that is what performances are built on – that hard work, graft, putting the effort in and pressing like you mean it, with a little bit of shape to it, and good things will follow.

“We played some great stuff. There is so much quality in the squad that we haven’t shown up until now. I never had any doubts about it. Just by being in games and pressing in the right areas you get into good positions – then good players are on the ball in good areas. Then it is over to them – your wingers to produce crosses and get at people, your centre-forwards to dominate in the air and your midfielders getting in the box. It’s what do you look like underneath that, your shape out of possession even when you are attacking, and locking it on. That was good.”

George Dobson, a player who struggled to feature regularly under Adkins, once again was a leading light for the Addicks.

“George was outstanding again,” said Jackson, who has a 100 per cent record in his three games at the helm. “I spoke highly about him after the game at Sunderland and he was equally good today.

“He’s come into the side under a little bit of pressure because it has been a tough start for him, because he was out for a while. But he’s gone about his business and done everything I’ve asked of him. He deserves his place in the team.”

Stockley, another to find himself out of the starting line-up at times as Charlton’s form stuttered under Adkins, collected his sixth league goal of the campaign after Lee’s free-kick was spilled.

“I’m pleased for Jay,” said Jackson. “It’s the third game in a row that he has scored. He could’ve had a couple more, the goalkeeper pulled off a couple of great saves. He was a menace all afternoon.

“I knew he’d give them a tough time aerially, because that is what he does, but also on the floor  – we don’t just want Jayden to be a targetman we can hit aerially, we know he can do that, but he can play as well. Some of his link-up play was excellent.”
