Kayne Ramsay on being bed-bound after knee injury to making strong return for Charlton Athletic

Kayne Ramsay has admitted he feared the worst when he was forced off with a knee injury in Charlton’s draw with Stockport in October.

However, just three months later, he has completed two back-to-back 90 minutes as the Addicks look to cement their place in the top six.

The 24-year-old was a key player at the beginning of the season and had started 10 of their opening 11 League One matches. But he went down in the 37th minute against Stockport and was unable to continue.

“I was devastated,” Ramsay told the South London Press, reflecting on his injury. “I pray every night and I pray before a game for no injuries and to get through the game.

“When it happened, because it was my knee, I didn’t know if it was my ACL, PCL or MCL. I just prayed it wasn’t the worst. I knew I was going to be out for a period of time. It was just about how to deal with it and the pain I was in.

“When it first happened, for a good 10 days, I was bed-bound. I couldn’t move. The only thing I could do was go in the shower. It was a struggle. I kept being told: ‘Do not put pressure on your leg. Do not take your brace off’.

“Credit to the staff and our physios, they helped me through it every single day and told me I was going to be fine. I feel exactly how I was before the injury. It could have had a seven or eight-month injury – I could have had surgery.

“The fact that our physio has done it in three months, I appreciate everything they have done for me.”

The South Londoners, who were 15th in the table after their 0-0 draw at home to Mansfield in the middle of December, are only outside the play-off spots on goal difference.

“We have to keep aiming for three points,” said Ramsay. “When we’re 1-0 up in the game, we have to not drop off and continue doing what works. We have to finish off teams instead of sitting back.

“We have to go for it – no matter if we’re home or away against the top of the league or the bottom.

“From when I got injured, I just hoped that I would come back into a team that was in the position we’re in now.

“We have the fight and willingness to push on and do well. Hopefully, I can add to it. We’re in the perfect place to go and do that.”
