Kwesi Appiah on “lucky” turn of events for AFC Wimbledon – and total belief they will stay up
Kwesi Appiah remains confident that AFC Wimbledon can complete a miraculous escape from the League One drop-zone.
The Dons were held 1-1 by Accrington Stanley on Saturday but were one of the only sides in the bottom half of the table to pick up any points.
Only goal difference keeps them in the bottom four.
And Ghanaian international Appiah is in no doubt they will stay up.
“Absolutely I’m confident,” he said. “None of the other lads will say anything different – that’s our mindset and we’ll continue with that all the way through.”
An enthralling relegation battle is drawing to a conclusion in League One, with an absurd five points between Gillingham in 13th and the Dons in 21st, who are occupying the final relegation slot.
Appiah said: “To be honest with you, we’re quite lucky.
We had a little rotten spell at the start of the season and in other seasons that could have seen us down already.
“We’re quite fortunate that this bizarre number of points and the amount of teams on the same points has happened now, because we needed it.
“It’s obviously fell luckily for us at the moment – we’ve just got to take advantage of that and do our best to get out of it.”
“We’ve got five cup finals – that’s going to determine our season.
“We’ve got to go into every game, regardless of form, regardless of anything and fight for the three points. At the end of the day, there’s a lot on the line here, so we’ve got to be prepared to do that.”
The Dons have mounted a fightback which seemed implausible after being 10 points adrift of safety a few weeks back, putting together a run of form which is the envy of the majority of the teams alongside them at the bottom.
“That sums up Wimbledon as a club,” said Appiah. “That fighting spirit, that never-say-die attitude and that’s why we’re climbing out of it. Long may that continue, because we’re heading in the right direction.”
