Lawrence Okoye rounds off season with fifth-place finish at Diamond League final

BY MIKE FLEET

Croydon Harrier’s UK discus record holder Lawrence Okoye rounded off a fine season with a fifth-place throw of 65.23m in the Diamond League final in Eugene USA last weekend.

He had progressed with earlier throws of 64.17m, 64.19m and 64.82m.

The event was surprisingly won by Matthew Denny of Australia when he unleashed an out-of-the-blue effort of 68.43m.

Okoye achieved over 60m in fifteen competitions this season with a best of 66.15m.

Due for a break, through, the Old Whitgiftian, whose UK record stands at 68.24m, might be a good bet for a top place in the Paris Olympics next year.
