Lee Bowyer clears up confusion over scorer of Charlton’s winning goal at Bristol Rovers

Lee Bowyer has cleared up any confusion surrounding the scorer of Charlton’s winning goal at Bristol Rovers.

Jake Forster-Caskey’s 64th-minute corner seemed to drift past everyone and straight into the back of the net – but some outlets claimed Liverpool loanee Liam Millar planted a deft flick on the ball at the near-post.

Bowyer confirmed it’s Jake Forster-Caskey’s strike, his third of the season, as Millar admitted himself that he didn’t get a nick on the ball.

Bowyer explained: “Liam Millar just walked past and said: ‘I thought it was my goal! Sky gave it to me but I didn’t really touch it. I felt the wind but I didn’t really touch it.’ So, he just confirmed that it’s Jake’s.

“He’s got to learn from that, hasn’t he! You should try and claim everything. You can tell he’s young and innocent. If that had been me I’d have said: ‘Yeh, I got a slight little touch, the smallest of touches.’ If that had been me, I’d have been claiming it.

“It’s Jake’s goal. It just went through everyone. He deserved it because he played really well.

“Jake, I said it on Tuesday and I’ll say it again, he’s been very, very good today. He’s driving everyone on at the moment in the middle of the park but he’s also getting on the ball and playing. I think he was outstanding again today. I’m really pleased for him, he deserved that goal. Obviously, a bit of luck to it but he deserved it because he was excellent.”
