Lee Bowyer: Duo’s debuts the only plus for Charlton Athletic tonight

Lee Bowyer felt the only positive from a Charlton perspective in tonight’s 2-0 loss to Accrington was the debuts of Liam Millar and Ronnie Schwartz.

Liverpool loanee Millar started on the left of a front three as the Addicks switched to a 4-3-3 formation.

Danish frontman Schwartz, who signed on a permanent basis from FC Midtjylland came on in the closing stages.

Charlton manager Bowyer said: “Liam did exactly what I expected him to do.

“Good, he gets us up the pitch – a bit like Alfie Doughty really. He gets us from back to front quite quickly. Moves the ball well. Again, the bits I need him to improve on – which he will improve on – is that final finish.

“You saw today he skipped inside a couple of times and if the finish is better he scores today – at least once. But I knew it was something we’d have to work on. We just haven’t had time yet, he’s been with us for two sessions. It’s something we’ll pick up on Monday. I’ll work with him on Monday, for sure. If we can get that right he will score goals for us because he gets into that position, like Alfie does.

“I just put Ronnie on for 15 minutes – if he gets a chance he’s gonna score. Unfortunately he didn’t get a chance. Good for him to get a feel for the place, the stadium and the players.

“You did see little bits of him, dropping into holes. His lay-off and link-up play is very good. All I can say is that, trust me, his finishing is very good. If he gets a chance then you’ll see it.

“It was good to see them both out there today. That was probably the only plus out of this season.”
