Lee Bowyer makes complaint call to referees’ chief Alan Wiley after three big calls go against Charlton in Reading match
Lee Bowyer spoke to referees’ boss Alan Wiley at the weekend – with the Charlton Athletic manager raging at two big decisions in Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Reading.
George Puscas scored from the sport after referee Darren Bond penalised a foul by Deji Oshilaja.
But then Chuks Aneke had an equaliser scrubbed off for offside – even though TV stills (below) show the striker’s goal should have stood.
Jake Forster-Caskey was booked for simulation in the second period, when replays seemed to show that the Charlton midfielder’s shirt was being tugged inside the penalty area.
Bowyer called Wiley, a referee director at PGMOL, on Saturday night.
“I just said to him that we had three big decisions in the game and we should have got a penalty – it was exactly the same as their one. If you’re saying their fella got pushed over, then so did ours.
“And Chuks Aneke is onside. You’re talking three big decisions between winning and losing a game.
“It isn’t right that those decisions cost us. We haven’t done anything wrong in the game.
“They didn’t score from open play and Dillon Phillips didn’t have a save to make.
“Yeah, we had other chances that we should score, but the officials have cost us the game.
“We were the better side in the game, playing against a good Reading side who had just beaten Luton 5-0 the week before, and we end up coming away with nothing.
“There is no recovery time. You get that going against you and now there is no recovery time for the final three games.
“At this stage of the season the officials have got to be spot on. They have to be right and do their job properly – because we did our jobs properly.
“It would have been a vital three points that would have put us nigh-on safe. Now we’re still in the dogfight. It’s wrong a game can be decided like that.”
Aneke was the only player to follow in when Aiden McGeady’s shot was parried by Rafael Cabral.
“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve told the players to do that,” said Bowyer. “It is the reason I tell Aidy and the other players to shoot that way – because you can get rebounds. If it goes over the bar that chance is gone.
“Aidy did everything I had told them to do for months now. We finally do it and it gets chalked off for no reason.”
