Lee Bowyer on Albie Morgan’s return to the Charlton side: “I know I can trust him”

BY LOUIS MENDEZ

League One starts have been few and far between for Albie Morgan this season – but the young midfielder impressed Lee Bowyer when he came back into the Charlton side for the 2-1 win over Northampton tonight.

The 21-year-old hadn’t featured in the last four matchday squads but came in against the Cobblers to make his first start in eight league games.

“It’s difficult with Albie,” admitted Bowyer.

“He’s a young lad that’s come through the system. He’s learning the game, learning the trade. He’ll play a few and then seem to run out of steam a bit. Today, he’s been really patient. In training he’s been really good. I said before the game that he deserved to start because of how well he has been training. He looked really sharp.

“We had a few tired players that needed a rest. The good thing for me is that now Albie, I know I can trust him to do the defensive side of the game. It’s all learning, but he’s doing it a lot better. I’ve never doubted how good he is on the ball. I’m pleased for him because, again, he’s grabbed that opportunity.

“Another one that I’ll praise. When you do well, I’ll praise you. And he’s done that today.”
