Lee Bowyer questions attitude as Charlton fail to build on win over Barnsley last weekend – and take just one point from Oxford and Rochdale

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer has questioned the attitude of his squad after they followed up last week’s win over Barnsley with just one point from a possible six against Oxford and Rochdale.

The South Londoners seemed flat during this afternoon’s 1-0 defeat at Spotland, with Ian Henderson’s strike after just four minutes proving decisive.

The Addicks wasted a golden opportunity to draw level as Lyle Taylor was denied from the penalty spot midway through the first-period. They also hit the woodwork twice during the contest and had a goal from Josh Cullen disallowed for offside – but in the end ended up on the wrong side of only Rochdale’s second home win of the season.

“I’ve just questioned attitude,” explained Bowyer.

“You can’t do what we did against Barnsley, one of the best sides in the league that we’ve played, and then go and get one point out of six against Oxford and Rochdale. That’s just wrong. I’ve just question them and their attitude because for me that wasn’t good enough. No matter where you go you have to fight and compete as a minimum. First-half we didn’t do that.

“Not good enough. First-half, I thought we were very poor. We didn’t compete, we didn’t pass the ball. Everything that we’re good at, we just didn’t do. I don’t know if we think we can just turn up and get handed three points – that ain’t football. That’s it. It just wasn’t good enough today.

“We miss a penalty, we hit the bar, the keeper made a great save from Josh (Cullen), but we still didn’t do the right things. All that other stuff is irrelevant. It’s what you do. What we’ve just done, how we performed – yes it was slightly better second-half but still not good enough. Not for what we are and what we’re about.

“Disappointing but we’ll go again, we’ll keep working at it and I’m sure we’ll get it right.”
