Liam Conroy promises no easy night’s work for Croydon’s Joshua Buatsi in British title challenge
Liam Conroy has promised no easy ride for Joshua Buatsi this weekend when the pair collide for the vacant British light-heavyweight title.
Croydon’s Buatsi (9-0) is hoping to add the domestic strap to the WBA international belt that he won in only his seventh professional bout.
The pair meet on the undercard of Charlie Edwards’ world title defence at the Copper Box Arena tomorrow night.
The Olympic bronze medallist is a huge favourite against Cumbrian Conroy (16-3-1), pictured below.
But none of that impresses the underdog. He told the Huddersfield Examiner: “It’s not about the opponent, it’s about my journey and the British title is my dream so I’m going to give it everything that I can and keep on going relentlessly till the final bell. I won’t stop until I have that belt.
“Like I say, it wasn’t about the opponent – it was about the title. I think no matter who the opponent was I would have taken the fight.
“People seem to think that I’ve been given something here, being in this fight, but I haven’t been given anything.
“I’ve kicked down all of these doors and I’ve made myself mandatory challenger to the British title.
“I won my British title fight eliminator in 2017 and I’ve just been working relentlessly since. This has always been my goal. This is a massive fight but I think it’s been a long time coming.
The British Boxing Board of Control have ordered Bermondsey’s Ted Cheeseman to defend his British title against Liverpool’s Anthony Fowler.
Fowler first has to win against Scott Fitzgerald for the vacant WBA international super-welterweight title on March 30.
Fowler said: “There’s a lot on the line, after I take care of Scott, Ted Cheeseman and the British title is next.”
