Lions assistant boss Adam Barrett: We had glorious opportunities to kill the Cardiff game off

Millwall assistant manager Adam Barrett was left ruing Kenneth Zohore’s misses in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Cardiff City.

The on-loan West Brom striker failed to take excellent chances in either half.

And the Lions – already 1-0 up due to an Aden Flint own goal – then saw Kieffer Moore level in the second period.

Barrett said: “We’re disappointed to come away with a point. They put us under a lot of pressure, especially first half – we struggled to get the press right and it allowed a lot of balls to come into the box.

“But we dealt with it tremendously. The guys dealt with it very, very well and we looked a real threat on the counter-attack, which we got the goal from.

“Delighted to be 1-0 up and the frustrating thing is we created a couple of glorious opportunities to take the game away from them – really they should be goals.

“If you ask Ken now I think he’ll say he should’ve taken them. He’s probably disappointed with the first one that he hasn’t made contact, we were in a great position, and the second one the goalkeeper has managed to just turn it around the post.

“He’ll be disappointed about that but the good thing – again – is that we’ve created two really good opportunities at a tough place. They’ve got a new manager who is very experienced in Mick [McCarthy]. We knew it would be a difficult afternoon.

“So to come here, go 1-0 up – and we could’ve gone two or three-nil up and really killed the game off was disappointing.

“We’ve got to keep working and keep bouncing back – that little bit of belief in front of goal and I’m sure that it will come.

“Ken has missed a lot of football and he’s building his minutes up and match sharpness up. The pleasing thing is he got into a couple of good areas there.

“Then one mistake, we give the ball away in the middle of the pitch, and we get punished for it.”

The Lions were unchanged from the 0-0 draw with Watford on Tuesday, a rarity with the congested fixture schedule.

“We have been pleased with the last two league performances,” said Barrett. “We’ve looked solid and got the extra man in the middle of the pitch. We didn’t feel we needed to change it today. The formation worked well, especially second half. In the first half their two midfielders kept rolling out wide and it was difficult to get the press right with them.

“We were much better second half. We pressed them higher and we able to win the ball back in better areas.”
