Liverpool winger open to Charlton Athletic loan return next season

Liverpool winger Liam Millar has not ruled out a return to Charlton Athletic next season.

The Canadian international made 27 League One appearances for the Addicks after signing on loan at the start of the January transfer window.

And Millar – asked if it was a possibility he could be back with the SE7 outfit again for the 2021-22 campaign – told Charlton TV: “Of course. I enjoyed myself while I was here. Anything can happen. I’m sure Nigel [Adkins, manager] and the club will speak to me about it. It’s about decisions, whether I want to go and challenge myself in the Championship or whatever.

“It’s always an option. I’m happy to come back because I had a great experience here.

“I had a little bit of a rough spell in Scotland [a loan at Kilmarnock] and didn’t do too well at times. I’ve matured over the time I’ve been here. When I came I was still used to U23s football where I was kind of doing the same thing over and over again. I went through a rough patch where I wasn’t playing my best. That’s football and I’ve never really experienced that before. Not being cocky, but the U23s was too easy for me.

“I had to move on and get league football. There were times where I was very predictable but towards the end [of his time at Charlton] I was able to go outside or inside – not just one way. I’ve improved on a lot of things. It was a positive loan spell.”

The Addicks only missed out on the League One play-offs on goal difference and finished seventh in the table. They signed off with victories over champions Hull City (1-0) and Lincoln City (3-1) at The Valley.

“We’re all disappointed,” said Millar. “We came into the game thinking we just had to win and hopefully results went in our favour. Unfortunately Oxford are a good side and they end up battering Burton.

“All we can do is do what we can control. We did that. It’s something we can build on and the lads can build on that next season.

“They are probably the best team in the league and Lincoln are a good side. We went toe to toe and proved we were as good as them, if not better. It’s all positives. Even though it is not play-offs it is not the end of the world. The club is in a good place now with the manager and all the players here. All the things should be good.

“When you reflect on the season there are games we should’ve won and we dropped points. That’s what killed us in the end. We conceded some goals at the last minute. We should’ve scored in a couple of games at the last minute. Because clearly we’re good enough – we can beat the best teams in this league. If we were in the play-offs we’d definitely be competing for a promotion.

“You’ve got to look back, see where you’ve gone wrong and try and fix it.”
