Manchester United team news for EFL Cup tie against Charlton Athletic
Jack Butland could make his Manchester United debut in tomorrow evening’s EFL Cup tie against Charlton Athletic.
The Red Devils will be without playmaker Bruno Fernandes with the Portuguese international suspended after picking up two bookings in the competition.
Butland made a loan move from Crystal Palace to the Manchester giants last week.
Stopper Martin Dubravka played in the previous round but has been recalled by Newcastle United.
‘If you miss goalies, you can’t replace them with inexperienced goalkeepers,” said United manager Erik ten Hag. “That’s the reason [we brought Butland in], we want to avoid that. We are really happy, we have a really experienced but also really skillful goalkeeper in.”
South Londoner Jadon Sancho has not featured for the Premier League outfit since October.
Ten Hag said last month that the former Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund attacker , who did not make England’s World Cup squad, was struggling “physically and mentally”.
Camberwell-born Sancho has been put on an individual training programme.
“We have some hurdles to take but I think he is [going] in a good direction,” said Ten Hag. “I can’t force this process so I will be really happy in the moment he is returning in the squad for team training – that will be the next step.”
Brazilian winger Anthony returned in Friday night’s 3-1 FA Cup win over Everton after crashing his top-of-the-range BMW on New Year’s Eve after a 1-0 win at Wolves.
He was not involved in the Premier League win over Bournemouth a few days later.
Anthony opened the scoring against the Toffees. Afterwards he said: “I also feel relieved as in the last few days I had a shock, but I prefer not to comment on what happened. It was a personal matter, really hard but I’m very grateful to God for putting this behind me now.”
