Mark Robinson claims AFC Wimbledon should have beaten League One promotion favourites Wycombe

AFC Wimbledon head coach Mark Robinson felt they should have won at Wycombe Wanderers – and added that their decision-making in the final third could have been better.

The Dons opened the scoring within four minutes at Adams Park – Jack Rudoni tapping home Ollie Palmer’s cross at the back post to score his sixth goal of the season.

Former Wimbledon forward Adebayo Akinfenwa equalised for Gareth Ainsworth’s side in the 74th minute when he lobbed Nik Tzanev from the edge of the area.

The South Londoners thought they found a late winner when Rudoni doubled his tally and headed home Egli Kaja’s cross in the 91st minute.

But Paul Osew was adjudged to have brought down Sullay Kaikai four minutes later by referee Will Finnie, leaving Wycombe captain Joe Jacobson to level from the spot and snatch two points away from the Dons.

“It is in some respects, but we should have won the game,” said Robinson when asked whether it was a great result for the Dons to secure a point away to a Wycombe side tipped for promotion to the Championship.

“We had the better chances in the first half – they had one good chance. In the second, we had three of four chances to put it to bed before they had their spell.”

Wimbledon had 14 shots at Wycombe’s goal during the 90 minutes, and Luke McCormick hit the post twice in the second half.

“I’ll have to look because Luke had a couple, Ayoub Assal had one, and a few of the players were saying there was maybe one more pass they could have found for an easier finish, but it’s never great on the touchline, so I need to look at them again,” said Robinson on the missed chances.

“Fundamentally, decision making in both boxes is what will win games and cost you games. Possibly, we could be sitting here, if we got our decision-making better, with a 3-1 or 4-1 victory.”

Speaking on the penalty that was awarded in the last kick of the game after Osew brought down Kaikai, Robinson added: “I had an awful view of it. There were a couple of bodies in front of me, so I couldn’t see. I just spoke to Paul, and he said they got tangled up. I can’t comment until I see it back.”
