Mark Warburton reckons “true” QPR fans will understand challenges faced

BY NICK KITUNO

Mark Warburton believes “true” Queens Park Rangers fans understand the club’s situation as he backed his young players following a derby day defeat to Fulham.

Jordan Hugill gifted Rangers the perfect start inside a minute, but Harry Arter grabbed the equaliser before Cyrus Christie’s stunning strike handed the visitors a vital three points.

QPR’s defeat was their third in a row post-lockdown as they remain eight points above the Championship’s relegation zone in 15th with six games to go.

Warburton said: “I think the fans, the good fans, will look at that and understand where we are. Simple as that.

“I’m trying to be very, very appropriate, shall we say, but young guys are stepping up. Young Faysal [Bettache] had been great on Saturday and nearly got on tonight – a young academy guy stepping up.

“Joe Gubbins, young guy stepping up. Conor [Masterson], young guy stepping up. Look at the age[s]. Ily [Ilias Chair], Rem [Oramide Oteh], Mide [Olamide Shodipo]. Look at the young guys who are showing real character and quality and meeting the challenge.

“When you ask those questions I hope, I hope, that the true QPR fans will [understand]. There will always be a few with some differing opinions, shall we say, but I think in general the good fans can see that and the young guys have delivered.”

Although the Rangers boss was disappointed with the goals his side conceded, he remained pleased with many of his players’ performances.

That included praise for academy graduate Osman Kakay, who made his first league start for the club since August 2018.

Warburton said: “There were a number of big performances but [for Kakay], to come in like that, play 90 minutes against a very good team, win his headers and be tight on one-versus-ones, he made a huge contribution.

“He made a huge contribution tonight, and that was a big ask for any player at any level.”
