Matt Cox saves two penalties as AFC Wimbledon knocked Cray Valley PM out of London Senior Cup

Two penalty saves by Matt Cox and a late brace by Corie Andrews fired AFC Wimbledon into the final of the London Senior Cup run at the expense of Cray Valley Paper Mills.

It was a cagey start with both teams working each other out. Andrews had the first chance but Joe Docherty stood up to block. Then, at the other end, Marcel Barrington broke through but Cox kept out his effort.

Ade Adeyemo netted when getting on the end of Kevin Lisbie’s cross-shot but he did so from an offside position before Cray Valley were awarded their first penalty. Ben Mason was adjudged to have handled but Cox kept out Barrington’s spot kick.

Obed Yeboah was off target with a chip before Elliott Bolton flashed a header wide from David Kawa’s cross as the interval loomed.

Kawa had a header saved easily in the second half before Jack Madelin fouled Cray’s Ryan King-Elliott in the area. This time veteran former Charlton striker Lisbie took the responsibility but Cox read his intentions and saved the spot kick.

Dylan Adjei-Hersey fired a free-kick well over for the Dons before Mason did well to clear when Barrington chipped over Cox from a tight angle.

Another Adjei-Hersey free-kick clipped the wall on its way over then Isaac Ogundere’s free-kick was cleared off the line by Matthew Warren as the hosts increased the pressure.

Eleven minutes remained when the Dons finally broke the deadlock. A corner was only half cleared and ex-Crystal Palace academy striker Andrews made no mistake from close range.

Cox made a good low save from a Jack Sammoutis shot before Docherty made an excellent tip over at the other end to keep out Adjei-Hersey’s header.

One minute remained when Andrews finished brilliantly to put the game beyond doubt. Who they will play remains to be seen as there is still one second round game, two quarter-finals and a semi-final to play on the other side of the draw.
