Matt Smith hoping to play big part in Millwall run-in after first league hat-trick of career

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Matt Smith is hoping his first league hat-trick will see him nail down a starting spot for Millwall’s run-in.

The Lions were terrific in a 3-0 victory at Nottingham Forest last night with the former Fulham and QPR targetman helping himself to a first-half treble.

At first it looked as if the second goal was netted by Jayson Molumby, but replays clearly showed the ball clipped off the foot of Smith.

Smith could be seen wagging his finger at the Brighton loanee as he ran off to celebrate. And he held up three fingers after heading home a deep corner at the back post.

Smith told Sky Sports: “The celebration [by Molumby] probably merited the goal itself. I can’t wait to watch that one back.

“But I think it nicked off my foot as it came through. It came at a hell of a pace.

Millwall’s Matt Smith (left) wins a header during the Sky Bet Championship match at City Ground, Nottingham.

“It was a great performance by the boys and we’re buzzing at the three points.

“I’ve had a few twos in my time, so it’s nice to get three. It’s sent the fans home happy.”

Smith has started 16 times this season for the Lions. Manager Gary Rowett went 4-4-2 at the City Ground with the 30-year-old partnered by Mason Bennett.

“No-one likes to label themselves as a substitute,” said Smith. “I came to Millwall with the intention of playing regularly.

“You’ve got to score goals to stay in the team. Hopefully with nine games to go I can be a mainstay and keep putting wins on the board. Who knows where that can take us?”
