Matty Godden: Charlton Athletic fans have a right to act how they want to act

Matty Godden had no complaints with supporters turning on Charlton Athletic’s players and manager Nathan Jones after Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to Crawley Town.

The Addicks are 12th in League One after the reverse and fans were quick to show their displeasure at the display.

Summer signing Godden skippered Charlton on the night before the club’s vice-captain Lloyd Jones, back in the matchday squad after a foot injury, was brought on in the closing stages.

“Listen, fans are entitled to say what they want to say and act how they want to act,” said the former Coventry City forward, when asked about the reaction of the home supporters.

“It is their football club and I’ve been coming here since I was little as well, it is up to us to be men on the pitch – try to take that away from our game, drive on and put in a performance.

“It was a tough night.

“We showed character probably from the 30th minute at Huddersfield, I know we didn’t get the result there, but that character rolled into the Burton game and then the weekend (a 4-0 FA Cup win at Walsall).

“We felt going into the Crawley match we could really try and build some momentum but we suffered a setback that we didn’t see coming.

“It seems like we take two steps forward and then get knocked back. We need to find that level of consistency because it is what this league needs.

“No team cuts us open with 10 or 11 passes. It seems we are conceding similar goals – long-range efforts. It’s something we need to learn from – and learn from quickly.

“I’ve been bottom in November at previous clubs and reached the play-off final. Leagues are bonkers and this league is no different.

“We know if we string two, three or four wins together then you’re probably going to be in the play-offs.

“It’s up to us now, as boys, to go and do that.”
