Matty Stevens says AFC Wimbledon showed ‘lack of concentration’ to see out Barrow game

AFC Wimbledon striker Matty Stevens says his side showed a lack of concentration to see out their two-goal advantage over Barrow on Saturday.

The Dons scored two second-half goals, with Stevens netting his first and Wimbledon’s second in the 85th minute as they looked set to claim all three points.

But an 88th-minute strike from Dean Campbell and a 96th-minute equaliser from ex-Millwall attacker Connor Mahoney saw Barrow rescue a late point.

“That’s a tough one to take,” Stevens told Wimbledon’s YouTube channel.

“That’s the toughest one this season, especially with the number of games left.

“We played well in the second half. We got the first and then we were hoping as a team to get the second – we did that.

“I thought we might get another goal and put us even further in the lead.

“It was a bit of a lack of concentration. We take the point.

“We have to go to the team top of the league next week and play like we did before they scored their two goals.

“We will be in that position again – we’re such a good team. We just have to manage it better and come away with three points.”

Stevens’ goal saw him end a seven-game wait to find the back of the net.

He moved joint top in the Golden Boot race on 17 League Two goals for the season with Notts County’s Alassana Jatta and Bromley’s Michael Cheek.

Stevens said: “It was a relief to score, but it was also a relief to get that second goal because I only saw us going on to win after that.

“It takes the niceness out of the goal today because of the way we have gone on to draw the game.

“I don’t like to go more than three games without a goal.

“This was my longest period throughout the season so it was a relief to get that goal.”
