Michael Appleton after yet another late goal conceded during Port Vale draw: I wish I could just get on the pitch and deal with it myself

Charlton head coach Michael Appleton wished he could throw himself into the action as his side conceded another goal deep into injury time at Port Vale.

The Addicks lead three times but were unable to hold on as Gavin Massey’s 92nd-minute strike earned a 3-3 draw for the home side.

Corey Blackett-Taylor had edged the South Londoners ahead just before the half-hour mark but Vale were on terms through Ethen Chislett’s penalty on the stroke of half-time. Karoy Anderson had been penalised for handball.

Dan Kanu bagged his first goal since returning from his loan spell at Southend to restore Charlton’s lead on 59 minutes – but Vale levelled once more moments later through Uche Ikpeazu’s header.

The Addicks seemed to have secured just a second away win of the campaign when Tyreece Campbell swept home seven minutes from time – but Massey’s late intervention means Charlton have now conceded seven goals in the last seven games beyond the 80-minute mark.

When asked about another late concession, Appleton, whose side are winless in seven games, said: “There’s times where I just want to get on the pitch myself and deal with it. But I mentioned it last week, we’ve got to keep putting ourselves in that position. When you’re in a run like this, it’s dead easy to lose two or three-nil.

“When you don’t go ahead in a game or concede the first goal you can let the opposition get away from you and think it’s not going to happen. The one thing the players are really good at is getting themselves in that position time and again.

“Ultimately at one point we’ve got to start getting over the line and see it out. But I’m a firm believer that if you do put yourselves in that position, with one or two new faces to give everyone else a lift, that will happen.

“There was a lot of tired minds towards the end. As well as tired bodies. When you get tired between the eyes you can make silly errors or decisions. If we can try and keep the players as fresh as we can, have options and can rotate, that will help us.

“It was definitely one for the neutrals. Lots of goals, chances at either end. Some good misses and poor saves. It had everything. And some really poor refereeing decisions. That’s not helping at this moment in time. The most pleasing thing was the spirit that we showed today. To put the effort in that we did against Oxford on New Year’s Day and get the sucker punch at the end and then to be able to do what we’ve done today is pleasing.”

The visitors may have had a penalty of their own in added-time as George Dobson’s flick appeared to hit a hand with Lloyd Jones lurking at the far post.

“It’s a stonewall penalty,” said Appleton.

“Lloyd is there to tap it in the goal and the guy has stopped it with his hand. I get the reason why he gave the penalty in the first half, but Karoy is so unfortunate. He slides in to block the cross with his feet and his hand is up. If you’re going to give that type of decision, then surely you’re got to give the one at the end?”
