Middlesbrough 1 Millwall 1 – Late heartbreak for Lions as Hugill snatches late equaliser

BY SCOTT WILSON

Millwall were pegged back in the most heart-breaking of fashions as Jordan Hugill’s 90th-minute penalty denied them what had looked like being a deserved win at Middlesbrough.

Leading through Jed Wallace’s first-half strike, the Lions dominated for long periods at the Riverside, but Steve Morison’s late foul on Daniel Ayala enabled Hugill to score from the spot.

Millwall dominated from the off, and might well have claimed the lead as early as the tenth minute. The Middlesbrough defence failed to deal with a corner, but while the ball dropped invitingly for Lee Gregory, the striker’s close-range shot was saved by an advancing Darren Randolph.

Gregory caused the Boro defence problems all afternoon, and was a central figure in Millwall’s opener midway through the first half.

He drew two defenders towards him as a swift counter-attack took the Lions upfield, and his deft square ball enabled an unmarked Jed Wallace to slot home from inside the box.

Jordan Archer made an important first-half save, turning Jonny Howson’s diving header wide of the post, and also made a decent second-half stop from Lewis Wing.

That looked like being that, but Morison prevented Ayala from reaching Stewart Downing’s late cross, and Hugill made no mistake from the spot.
