Millwall 1 Barnsley 2 – Lions see unbeaten run end as Schmidt’s stoppage time goal earns Tykes first away win of the season
BY RICHARD CAWLEY
Patrick Schmidt’s stoppage-time goal saw Millwall’s seven-game unbeaten run in the Championship ended – and earned Barnsley a first away victory of the campaign.
The Lions had cancelled out Conor Chaplin’s excellent first-half opener when substitute Aiden O’Brien converted Matt Smith’s header from close range.
But Barnsley found a decider late in stoppage time. Jed Wallace paid a heavy price as his attempts to beat Luke Thomas failed and the ball in from the right was clinically guided home by Schmidt.
It is the third league win in a row for the Tykes at The Den.
Millwall started the match strongly but their superiority did not translate into decent chances and it was the visitors who opened the scoring – Chaplin leaving Bartosz Bialkowski a spectator as he produced a fine first-time finish from Jacob Brown’s cross. It was his seventh goal in as many matches.
Tom Bradshaw went close against his former club – Wallace’s cross was met first time by the striker but cleared the crossbar.
The Lions levelled on 85 minutes. Smith’s header was an attempt on goal by the second-half substitute but O’Brien, also introduced after the interval by boss Gary Rowett, had to finish off from about five yards out.
Barnsley had the better chances on goal and Bialkowski made a number of saves – denying Alex Mowatt on a couple of occasions.
There was one final twist – and it wasn’t good news for Millwall as Schmidt did the business. It is the first time that the Yorkshire side have won back to back Championship games since November 2017.
