Millwall attacker Connor Mahoney ruled out of Bristol City match

Millwall are set to be without Connor Mahoney and Mason Bennett’s for Wednesday night’s Championship home game against Bristol City.

Winger Mahoney made his first league start of the campaign in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest. He was replaced in the 69th minute by Benik Afobe.

“Connor felt his hamstring and came off,” said Lions manager Gary Rowett. “At first we thought it was a little bit of cramp and tightness but he has got quite a minor grade one tear in there.

“We think he’ll probably be about a couple of weeks.”

Striker Bennett has not featured since the 1-1 draw against Coventry on September 18.

“Mason is having an injection in his lower back at some point in the next few days,” said Rowett. “He is probably going to be out until the international break unless he feels absolutely incredible. The sensible thing to do is to give him the week just to let it settle.

“He has had a really strange achy pain in the bottom of his spine and it got worse over a period of games. He was struggling to train with it. Rather than keep going we are trying to get to the bottom of it. It’s a bit frustrating because we don’t think it is anything too serious but it is stopping him moving freely. A player like Mase has to be able to move with the ability to be dynamic or a big part of his game is gone.”

There is some good news for Millwall with Jed Wallace due to resume training after illness forced him to sit out recent fixtures. Danny McNamara is also set to be available for selection.

Asked about the seemingly never-ending injury issues, Rowett said: “We are starting to get used to that feeling of not being able to pick the same team for two games in a row. What I would say is that we are just starting to get some options back and the squad is starting to look a little bit healthier, even if we’re missing one or two.

“Sheyi [Ojo] got through the game quite well at the weekend, he looked really bright at times – he is still not going to be at his best [due to illness and a lack of match action before his loan move from Liverpool]. Benik [Afobe] came on and had no follop-up issues.. He’s ready to push forward.

“Having Jed available will be huge. Hutch [Shaun Hutchinson] got through the [Forest] game fine. Danny will be back available. We start to have a bit more depth and more to change things off the bench.”
