Millwall boss a big admirer of Andreas Voglsammer as striker still hunting first goal in English football

Millwall boss Gary Rowett has discussed Andreas Voglsammer’s wait for a first goal in English football.

And the Lions manager’s assessment of the 30-year-old German, signed from Berlin in the summer, makes it clear he is perfectly happy with his integration into the Championship club’s squad.

Voglsammer has played a wide right role for Millwall with Tyler Burey operating down the left.

Tom Bradshaw has started up top in recent weeks with Zian Flemming operating in a number 10 role or secondary striker.

Rowett said: “He [Voglsammer] is probably playing on the opposite side to where he is most comfortable, or down the middle.

“His form has really settled down. He has played at such a high level, but you’ve got to remember he hasn’t started in a run of games for at least 18 months. It takes a while to get that rhythm back.

“His performances have been better and better with each game. He has looked more and more assured with his performances. He has helped the team off the ball brilliantly. Tactically he really understands the game. He has worked tirelessly.

“He has given us real good quality going forwards. That goal will come very soon and he’s been really close, hasn’t he? He’s had three or four shots which haven’t quite found their way into the back of the net.

“In terms of his attacking ability and attacking potential, he is probably 70 or 80 per cent where he can be.

“There’s more to come and that more to come will be that little bit of extra confidence from games, and maybe finding himself occasionally on the other side of the pitch where he has played a lot of his football – particularly at Bielefeld. That’s where he is more natural, just like with Tyler and just like it is with Benno – being on the left and then cutting in on his right. That is where those opportunities to shoot become so much easier and so much better angles.

“He’s a really good character, works incredibly hard and fits exactly the mould of the type of player we want at the football club.

“His quality will continue to show through because he has played at the very top level.”
