Millwall boss admits it was ‘bit of a toss up’ on one of his selection calls at Blackpool

Gary Rowett has described it as “a bit of a toss up” when it came to choosing between Callum Styles and Scott Malone at left-wing back in Millwall’s win at Blackpool.

Hungarian international Styles, on a season-long loan from Barnsley, started the fixture at Bloomfield Road.

Malone, due to be out of contract at the end of June, replaced him for the final nine minutes of normal time and then a lengthy stoppage period.

Rowett switched to a 3-4-3 formation for the match.

“It was a bit of a toss up because both have played wing-back very effectively,” Rowett told the South London Press. “Scottie is predominantly more of a wing-back anyway and Stylesy played there for a whole season with Barnsley, so you can argue he has probably played that more than any other position.

“I just felt we needed a little bit of something fresh in those wide areas. I don’t know if you remember, but we did it early season. We hit a little bit of a lull in our performances and I think I put Shacks (Jamie Shackleton) and Stylesy in as wing-backs and both performed reall well – a different spark about them.

“And that was it, really. It wasn’t anything other than that. I’d have happily played Scottie there and not batted an eyelid. It was just a toss up between two players, a bit like a lot of the positions. It’s like the forward one – I could’ve played Vogey, Burkey, Mason or Tyler. I could’ve played so many different players in the top end of the pitch.

“Sometimes you look at what the game needs and you just have a little feeling of what you think it is going to require – sometimes you just have to go with that.”
