Millwall boss explains his players’ full-time celebrations as Charlton put block on flag in away end

Millwall manager Gary Rowett has claimed that Charlton refused to allow the visitors to put up a flag for yesterday’s derby at The Valley.

Jake Cooper’s 81st-minute goal earned the Lions their first victory since emerging from lockdown and moved them within two points of sixth-placed Cardiff City.

And the Millwall players applauded and cheered some Millwall fans who had draped a flag over the balcony of a flat that overlooked the pitch.

Asked about the reaction of his squad at full-time, Rowett said: “Charlton refused to let us put a flag in the away end – we’ve done that for every other team this season. I feel if you can’t have your fans there you’ve got to do the right thing. They wouldn’t let us do it.

“Someone put a flag out on the tower block so I think the lads were just trying to show their appreciation. It was nice for us to be able to do that.

“We wanted to put the flag out, we weren’t allowed to do it, so it is what it is.

“It is one of those times at the moment if you can’t have fans there you’ve got to do the right thing as a club.

“Charlton said we couldn’t do it, our lads went to the flag in the tower block. It’s no big deal.”
