Millwall boss Gary Rowett delighted to have no transfer drama surrounding key man

Millwall manager Gary Rowett is pleased that their resolve to hold on to Jed Wallace was not seriously tested in the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old attacker has been the club’s leading light from an attacking perspective – particularly in the previous two campaigns as he scored double figures.

Wallace has already netted three times in the 2021-22 season, including converting a free-kick and crossing for Jake Cooper’s winner against Blackpool before the international break.

The former Portsmouth and Wolves winger will have just seven months left on his Millwall contract at the start of January.

Asked about Wallace, Rowett told the South London Press: “His situation has remained pretty consistent throughout. We certainly don’t want to sell Jed. Our preference would be that he’s here a long time – because we think he is a top, top player. We didn’t have a situation in the window where we had to make a decision based on a massive bid coming in that made us think ‘well, that’s good business’.

“I don’t think it has been that type of window. If you look, in general, there has not been many big deals and big signings – or many teams paying big transfer fees. It means if you probably were looking to sell an asset then this window was probably the least favourable of many over the last few years.”
