Millwall boss Gary Rowett happy to avoid the big guns in tonight’s FA Cup draw

Millwall manager Gary Rowett will tune in for tonight’s FA Cup third round draw – but isn’t pinning his hopes on a high-profile tie.

The Lions have had decent runs in the competition in recent years.

Millwall beat reigning Premier League champions Leicester City in the 2016-17 season – also accounting for top-flight Watford and Bournemouth at The Den in the same campaign.

And they knocked out Everton in January 2019 in SE16.

“It’s a fabulous competition and one that I know the club has got a really good tradition in,” said Rowett. “There have been some big games at The Den against bigger opposition, I remember watching the Everton one a couple of seasons ago.

“We’ll watch the draw keenly. It could be quite difficult this year because the season is so condensed that it’s hard to know whether teams will have half an eye on the cup games as the only chance to give a breather to one or two.

“Rather than maybe getting a big team at The Den I tend to be the opposite – a game where we have a bigger chance of getting through rather than aiming to cause an upset.

“We navigated the Carabao Cup not too badly earlier in the season, apart from the Burnley game. We’re hoping we have a little run in this competition as well.”
