Millwall boss Gary Rowett: We’ve identified transfer targets – but likely to need a reactive approach to deal developments

Gary Rowett is clear on the areas he wants to strengthen in the January transfer window – but admits that mid-season activity is likely to be “reactive” for Millwall.

The Lions are only four points behind the play-off positions after a 2-1 victory at Bristol City on Tuesday night.

Millwall are sixth in the Championship form guide and have not lost since November 2.

Rowett has appeared to suggest that the Lions – not one of the big spenders in the division – will have to wait for the trickle down effect of deals next month to see which of the players on their transfer hitlist are available.

“With it being the January window – and the position we’re in – realistically we’re waiting for things to happen,” said the Lions chief.

“We’re waiting for key players to become available and teams not to take some of their targets and leave other targets available. That’s the reality.

“We’ve got an idea of what positions we’d like to strengthen in terms of the squad.

“There are some players on that list but it’s hard to be too specific at this moment – January is more a reactive window of what’s available – at what time – rather than the summer when you can plan it a little bit more and have a list of players.”

An X-ray on Shaun Williams’ hand came back all clear – there were fears he had a break – and he should be fine for tomorrow’s trip to Pride Park.

Jayson Molumby has a tight quad which he has been managing for the last few matches.

Ben Thompson has needed injections in a toe injury. Rowett said: “It’s one of those that you can’t do too much about it. You’ve got to get it as comfortable as you can from a pain perspective and crack on. Thommo wants to get on with it and wants to play – which shows great character.”

Goalkeeper Frank Fielding, out since injuring his quad on the opening day of the season against Preston, is close to a return.

“His power is up to about 85 per cent and we need him to be at 90 for him not to be a re-injury risk,” said Rowett. “He still has a little way to go before he is back out with the goalkeepers, but he isn’t a million miles away.”

Millwall have been handed 1,492 tickets for tomorrow’s match. The Lions are just three points shy of their away haul in the 2018-19 campaign – picking up seven from their last three fixtures alone.
