Millwall boss gives his verdict on ‘big game’ against Blackpool

Millwall manager Gary Rowett has spoken about today’s home game against Blackpool and admitted a priority is improving results at The Den.

Both sides are winless in the Championship going into the contest. The Lions are looking to halt a run of two successive defeats as they welcome last season’s League One play-off victors.

A defeat for the hosts would see them head into the international break in the bottom three.

Millwall endured a 15-match spell last season where they won one match – 2-0 at Bristol City – but still ended up on 62 points, just two victories off their total for the 2019-20 campaign when they were close to making the play-offs.

Rowett said: “It’s a big game for us, because we haven’t won so far.

“Both teams are going to be desperate to get that first win. But I don’t think you can put one game so far above any other, after four games because we’ve had runs of form in this division – last season we won one game in 15 midway through it. We could do that and be horrendously disappointed but finish almost as high [11th] as the season before that [eighth].

“It is an important game for us, but it is important we go and perform better every home game in particular as well. We need to win as many games in the league as we can at home. I’ve spoken about the importance of the fans and we have got to give them those performances and then we hoped they would help us. We’ve got to generate that atmosphere so that they get behind us, if we do.”
