Millwall boss Neil Harris on why David Martin made rare league start in victory at Birmingham City

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Neil Harris talked about a “change of impetus” being needed with his call to start David Martin in last night’s 2-0 win for Millwall at Birmingham City.

The former Milton Keynes goalkeeper had only made one Championship appearance for the Lions – and that was back in December 2017 when he kept a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw at Aston Villa.

But Martin, who has played four times for Millwall since joining at the start of last season, produced another shutout in the Midlands as the South Londoners ended a four-match losing streak.

Asked about the change – one of four that Harris made for the fixture – the Lions chief said: “Sometimes you need to change things, change of impetus, change of direction.

“Dave has got great qualities and leadership.

“He hasn’t played a lot of football in the last couple of years, but he is a strong character and he is a really good talker.

“I thought in a difficult place to play might just help the back-four. Jordan [Archer] was disappointed, but took it really well and supported really well tonight. Decisions wise I will make that call before the weekend.”
