Millwall boss Rowett: ‘We cannot risk health of players’

Millwall’s players are desperate to get back to matches – but they can’t risk their health, says manager Gary Rowett.

The Lions boss is currently aiming to get his squad back to training around May 16, along with the rest of the EFL.

That would give the country and especially football fans a lift, he hopes.

But there would be dangers in coming back too soon.

Rowett has been right for almost a month about the kind of schedule the English football authorities look ready to adopt.

So he is waiting to hear on Thursday what the government’s decisions will be on lockdown.

If some regulations are loosened, players might be able to return to training grounds, albeit keeping their social distance.

“But if we turn up with five people together, that might look irresponsible,” he said.

“Going back soon might save some clubs – and give people some optimism that they can enjoy football again soon. And I would go back straight away if that were possible.

“All our players want to get back and play. It is what they love doing. It is their passion.

“But not everyone agrees. Some at other clubs will be reticent.

“They might only go back if it is deemed safe by the government.

“Otherwise, it might be dangerous for players.

“But we can’t just forget a season, when teams have worked so hard. You can’t just say to Liverpool, who have waited 30 years to win the title, that they have to take it on the chin.

“Somehow it has to finish – ideally with the fans.

“If that’s not possible, we have to consider playing behind closed doors.

“And outside football, other people are desperate to get back to work, despite the risks, because their business is going under – they have to do something, or their lives might be over.”
