Millwall boss spells out situation with Jed Wallace – as winger heads into final 12 months of Den deal
Gary Rowett has reiterated his desire for Jed Wallace to sign a new contract at Millwall – and has made it clear only a “whopping bid” would change the situation.
The 27-year-old has been the Lions’ standout attacker in recent seasons but only has 12 months to run on his deal.
“It is very simple,” said Millwall manager Rowett. “Ideally we want him to stay. We hope he’ll make the difference. Either way he will still be open to contract talks continuing.
“Unless someone puts in a whopping great massive bid – and it would have to be huge – we have got nothing to consider.
“We don’t want to lose Jed. We want him to stay and be the difference, because he has been the difference in the last two years.
“But we have to respect players and the fact that not every player wants to dive in straight away and sign a new contract.
“I’m pretty relaxed on it, and I think Jed is too.
“You’re always at a little bit of vulnerability in this situation if someone comes in with a massive offer and the player wants to go, then of course you have to consider it – if they have got one year left. We don’t want to be in that position and want it to happen, simple as that.
“I kind of let everyone else deal with that because I want to focus on the football side. Once you start mixing the two together, iot starts to detract a little bit from what we’re trying to do.”
