Millwall defender signs new contract – to end transfer window speculation over his future

Millwall defender Jake Cooper has signed a new contract.

The 28-year-old centre-back was due to be a free agent next summer and had attracted interest from Rangers in the summer transfer window.

But the Lions have agreed fresh terms with Cooper. It is club policy not to announce the length of any of the deals their players are on.

Cooper has played every minute for the Championship club this season and has scored 22 goals in 304 appearances since joining from Reading, initially on loan.

Millwall boss Gary Rowett told the South London Press: “I’m really pleased. That was one of the things I felt was rumbling on and probably wasn’t helping, with such a big player and such an important one in Coops, for it to be unresolved. I’m sure Jake will say it hasn’t had any effect but overall it doesn’t really help.

“It helps Coops, first and foremost it gives him that confidence of where he is going to be and what he is going to be doing. And it also gives the club stability – he has been a real part of the success of the team and defence for many years now. Thankfully he is going to be a continued part of that.

“He is a player that other clubs would want and one who has performed very consistently for Millwall over the years.

“Now hopefully we can crack on and start to improve performances.”
