Millwall end pre-season friendly schedule with 1-0 defeat to Premier League new boys Southampton

Millwall wrapped up their pre-season friendly programme with a 1-0 defeat to Southampton at The Den this afternoon.

The newly-promoted Premier League side broke the deadlock in the second half when Adam Armstrong pounced to finish from close range after new Lions goalkeeper Lukas Jensen was unable to keep hold of Will Smallbone’s cross.

The hosts were without first-teamers Zian Flemming (calf) and Billy Mitchell (quad). Both first-teamers were at the match but watching from behind the home dugout.

Jensen made a couple of crucial interventions in the first period as he pushed away Yuki Sugawara’s shot from the edge of the box as well as blocking with former Millwall youngster Sam Edozie had a chance presented inside the penalty area.

Millwall’s best opportunity came just after Armstrong’s goal. Romain Esse picked out a lovely cross for Joe Bryan but the left-back’s first-time stab at the ball saw it go harmlessly wide.

Saints substitute Tyler Dibling struck the bar with a full-blooded attempt.
