Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts praised for concentration levels in win at Portsmouth

Goalkeeper Liam Roberts marked his first Championship start with a clean sheet in last night’s 1-0 win at Portsmouth.

The 30-year-old has played the role of back-up to Lukas Jensen in the league but came on in the closing stages of Saturday’s victory over Luton.

Jensen was stretchered off the pitch but head coach Alex Neil revealed yesterday that the former Burnley and Lincoln stopper is set to be back in contention very soon.

Roberts has only conceded once in the four matches he has featured in, the 1-0 home loss to Orient in the EFL Cup. He also recorded a shutout at Fratton Park in that same competition for his Millwall debut in August.

The summer signing was well-protected by his defence in midweek but still made some confident claims from crosses.

“I thought he dealt well with the long shots as well,” said Neil. “Those ones that skip off the turf are hard to deal with, trust me. Them boys hit the ball hard, so when you get behind it you need to get your full body behind that.

“Particularly when you have not played a lot of games it means concentration is key.

“I was delighted for him. I thought he deserved that performance and a clean sheet.”
