Millwall goalkeeper Long makes Norwich City free transfer move

Millwall goalkeeper George Long has signed a two-year contract at Norwich City.

The 29-year-old has been allowed to leave SE16 on a free transfer.

The Lions signed Matija Sarkic from Wolves as their new number one earlier this month.

“When you have worked so hard to become number one, like Longy did, then it is hard to stay as a number two and be happy with it,” Millwall boss Gary Rowett told the South London Press.

“It was a difficult summer for him. We had an opportunity to bring Matija in, which is something we chose to do. You understand Longy is probably going to want to seek a different opportunity.

“That is fair to allow him to do that, it wasn’t going to be fair to stand in his way. He goes to Norwich to compete – I don’t necessarily think there is that automatic number one spot. But it is a different environment.

“These decisions are always tough. Do we decide to bring another keeper in? Do we continue working the way we’re working? It’s never easy. When you make a decision it always affects someone else – that is the challenge of the job.

“It is a good move for George and I wish him all the best because he has worked really hard.”

Long told Norwich’s official website: “I didn’t need much convincing, the recent history, being in the Premier League and the size of the club, the fanbase and the ambition.

“It’s a really exciting proposition and I’m delighted to be here.”
