Millwall goalscorer Callum Styles: We’ve stepped on the gas

Callum Styles reckons that Millwall “have stepped on the gas” after chaining together four straight Championship wins.

Only three clubs have taken more points over the last six matches than the Lions (13) – QPR (15), Swansea (15) and Luton (14).

Saturday’s 2-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion was a seventh victory in nine league matches at The Den. Along with Blackburn Rovers, Millwall have the best home record in the Championship.

Styles, on a season-long loan from Barnsley, cancelled out John Swift’s opener for the Baggies with a smart close-range finish after Andreas Voglsammer’s free-kick was not cleared.

“It’s just good to get my first goal at The Den,” said the Hungarian international. “It was an important one to get us back in the game. Hopefully there is more to come.

“I contributed to the team and I felt I played quite well. Each player has got to bring something to the team – give it their all.

“The mood is buzzing. We can enjoy it tonight [Saturday] but then it’s back focused on Saturday’s game. That’s what it has got to be, we’ve got to take it one game at a time and keep this run going – see where it takes us.

“We’ve won four on the bounce and the draw away to Rotherham was kind of the turning point. The results before that weren’t too bad, just mediocre, but now we’ve stepped on the gas.

“There is a lot of competition for places and that comes in as a big factor – you’re battling against other players to play and that increases the competition and level in training. We show that in the games.

“The squad we’ve got is really good. In the last couple of games we’ve had a really strong bench and that’s a massive factor when you’re putting the pressure on late in games, but you need maybe that little spark or different player to come on.

“Tyler came on and was the difference. In previous games that can be Benik [Afobe] coming on and scoring. That’s what you need to be challenging at the top of the table.

“We want to be looking up and not down.”
