Millwall have all the core attributes to be a success in the FA Cup

Neil Harris feels his Millwall side have the perfect ingredients in their side to have FA Cup runs – after they booked a quarter-final slot for the second time in the past two years.

The Lions reached the last eight in the 2016-17 campaign, only seeing their run ended by Tottenham at White Hart Lane. And they had already dumped three top-flight sides by that point – Bournemouth, Watford and Leicester City.

Harris’ men added to that list of top-flight victims last month as they beat Everton 3-2.

And Murray Wallace’s early header secured a 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon this afternoon.

Millwall will find out their opponent on Monday evening, when the quarter-final draw takes place.

Asked about the club’s impressive record in the competition, Harris replied: “I’m proud of the players today. I said it wasn’t going to be pretty and free-flowing football. We knew Wimbledon would make it really difficult for us – and they did.

“If we’d got a second goal with 20 or 25 minutes to go then I think we might have got three or four and made it a lot more comfortable for ourselves.

“I’m just as pleased with the clean sheet.

“Why does the FA Cup bring out the best in us? It’s not always the best team which wins the game, or the best footballing team.

“It’s the one with the biggest heart and the right mentality. That’s why they’ve been so good under me in this competition.”
