Millwall in talks with Danny McNamara over contract extension

Gary Rowett has spelled out his desire to keep Danny McNamara at Millwall.

The 23-year-old Lions right-back has been linked with Queens Park Rangers.

The R’s made a second bid for McNamara on Thursday in the region of £300,000 that was instantly rejected by Millwall.

The Lions were already discussing a new deal with the former Republic of Ireland U21 international, who they recalled from a loan at St Johnstone in January 2021 to slot into their side.

McNamara has made 55 appearances for the Lions.

“Danny is a player we value a lot,” Rowett told the South London Press. “He’s had a very good last season. He’s a young player we brought back from Scotland in order to give him an opportunity to play in our first team.

“We’re in talks with him about extending his contract.

“Our aim is to come to a conclusion with that as soon as we can, because you want him held.

“You want him giving himself his best chance to play as well as he can next season – because if he can kick on again then he’s turning into a really, really good player.

“That’s as far as it goes for us, that’s the aim for us.

“I don’t really get involved in any outside speculation. I’ve read that we’re in for players that, at times, I’ve never even heard of.

“Clearly people distort things in the press.

“For every one story that is correct I’m sure there are three or four people trying to do little bits behind the scenes.

“Our focus is on getting Danny sorted, giving him a chance and a platform to be happy to push on. That’s our aim, to get there as quickly as we can.”
