Millwall keeper ‘sensational’ as penalty save tops off performance in FA Cup win at Leeds United
Alex Neil hailed stand-in goalkeeper Liam Roberts’ “sensational” display in the wake of Millwall’s 2-0 win over Leeds in the FA Cup today.
Femi Azeez grabbed the headlines with a match-winning brace but Roberts, selected ahead of Lukas Jensen for the fourth round trip to Elland Road, excelled between the posts.
The highlight of his performance was undoubtedly a superb penalty save to deny Pascal Struijk on the hour mark as Leeds probed for a way back into the match after Millwall’s second goal.
But Neil told Millwall TV that he was impressed with Roberts’ whole performance, which comes just weeks after he kept another clean sheet in the league against Portsmouth.
Neil said of the stopper: “He was sensational the whole game. The last game he played as well, away at Portsmouth, he was excellent.
“You can see what it means to him. He’s a really passionate lad who wears his heart on his sleeve. He absolutely loves it and he gets the fans going as well, because they love it. He was great, so fair play.”
Wes Harding made just his second appearance of the season at right-back in place of the cup-tied Tristan Crama and was also lauded for the role he played in shutting out Leeds.
Neil added: “What’s brilliant with the team is the fact that they genuinely care about each other and they want to see each other do well. That’s really, really pleasing for me watching it.
“Wes was one that we gave a special mention to at the end of the game because he’s had a difficult period here, he’s not been involved a lot.
“Fair play to him, because he came in and put a great performance in.”
