Millwall Lionesses see off namesakes to continue impressive start

Millwall Lionesses assistant manager Alex Russell was pleased with his side’s “professional performance” during their 4-0 win against New London Lionesses on Sunday afternoon.

The Lionesses have scored an impressive 35 goals in the first eight games of the 2022-23 campaign in all competitions.

Millwall started the better of the two sides and went close when Angel Reid’s delivery evaded everyone at the back post.

But it was not long before the South London club were in front as Jade Keogh finished from outside the box after some good build up play down the right.

It was two shortly afterwards as Amy Nash’s corner was headed home by Otesha Charles.

The Lionesses, in the London & South-East Regional League, didn’t have to wait long for goal number three either, Charles once again showing her pace and quality before finding Reid, who slotted home.

Just after the restart all three points were definitely secured as Maisie Joyce stepped up and calmly slotted home from the spot.

Russell said: “It was a professional performance. It wasn’t the prettiest, or by any means our best, but it got the job done and extended our fantastic run of form and stands us in good stead ahead of the FA Cup next week.

“You can’t lose if you don’t concede and the girls are starting to recognise that if you build from the base up, with the natural attacking threat we have this season, we’re bound to create chances. We just need to deny our opposition chances at our own end of the pitch.

“Three clean sheets in a row is something we can be immensely proud of. The girls have worked hard and it’s a credit to them and the least they deserve.

“Early goals are incredibly important. They completely change the dynamic of how teams will plan to set up against us. If teams go a goal down, it naturally opens the game up for more opportunities as they can’t sit in and be compact when they’re a goal or two worse off.

“Naturally, as teams become a little more expansive and push for an equaliser, it creates pockets for our forwards to go and play in, which they’ve done exactly that for yet another consecutive game.”
