Millwall man is designated penalty taker – as he repays starting spot with winner at Reading
Gary Rowett has confirmed that Andreas Voglsammer is the designated penalty taker for Millwall.
The German attacker scored his second goal for the club since his summer move from Union Berlin, as his spot-kick sealed a 1-0 victory at Reading today.
The Lions had only had one penalty before that this season with Benik Afobe, who was released in January by mutual consent, failing to convert at Bristol City.
Millwall also look to have other potential takers in the shape of Zian Flemming and Tom Bradshaw, who have 13 goals each this season.
Voglsammer was the only change made by the Lions boss with Oliver Burke dropping to the bench.
But Rowett said: “Vogey is our number one penalty taker. When you see him in training, he is excellent. He hits them hard, he hits them with power and great direction.
“Obviously we’ve got two or three if people aren’t playing or aren’t starting. But Vogey started today. I decided to bring him back into the team. Reading are very good at dropping in deep and making it hard for you to find space.
“I felt Burkey might be more beneficial later in the game. With us being 1-0 up we didn’t need it until really late in the game. It was a game Vogey needed to start today and thankfully he did because he scored us the winning goal.”
Burke led a late counter with Bradshaw and Flemming either side of him. He opted for the former but he was unable to control and Joe Lumley slid out to deny Millwall a killer second goal.
“We had a spell where we made two substitutions with 15-20 minutes to go but because of the size of Reading and the players they had of stature, we couldn’t really make any more changes,” said Rowett.
“We knew it was going to be a set-piece or a ball into the box which was going to be the way they scored. I was kind of limited at the end, in terms of the energy. The likes of Bradders had to stay on. He looked gassed. Burkey probably chose the wrong side to pass. If he’d have found Flemm, who maybe had a bit more energy at that point.
“We had a couple of good transitions to make the game a little bit easier. But it was always going to be whether we could see it out. We haven’t had many clean sheets away. For the away team not to concede too many chances, you’d have to say that was a really good away performance.”
