Millwall manager reveals Christmas Day training schedule for his squad

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Millwall’s squad will train this evening before heading off for their Boxing Day assignment at Cardiff City – with manager Gary Rowett admitting he has tried every approach possible in terms of preparation for that particular festive fixture.

The Lions head to Wales and a reunion with their former boss Neil Harris.

It means players have to break away from Christmas celebrations.

Rowett said: “I’ve done it every single way. We’ve trained Christmas morning, left and come back to travel on Christmas night. We’ve been in Christmas night and then travelled.

“We’ve had mixed results either way. I don’t think there is just one way to do it.

“We’ll come in about 5pm and do a light session and then travel – simple as that.

“Whoever did the fixture list had too many Christmas sherries and mince pies because I’m not sure how we’ve ended up in Cardiff on Boxing Day. But it is what it is.

“If you’re anything like me then by about 3pm you’ve had enough presents and too much food. You want to crack on and get some work done.

“Every manager up and down the country is different. My argument is that it’s important for the players to at least wake up and open the presents with the family and kids – and be normal for a day.

“But the second they leave the house it is pretty much working hard to well into January.”
