Millwall midfielder clinches two-year contract at Dutch top-flight newcomers

Maikel Kieftenbeld has confirmed his Millwall exit after signing a two-year contract with Dutch top-flight newcomers FC Emmen.

The Lions had not agreed fresh terms with the former Birmingham City midfielder, whose game time in SE16 was set to be heavily limited.

FC Emmen have also disclosed there is an option for Kieftenbeld to extend his stay by a further 12 months.

The 31-year-old, who turns 32 later this month, made 27 Championship starts and 11 substitute appearances after joining from Birmingham in January 2021.

Kieftenbeld told FC Emmen’s official website: “After seven great years in England, the time has come for me to return to the Netherlands. FC Emmen is a great club with ambition and I hope to be able to be important to the team with my experience. I am looking forward to entering the Eredivisie with FC Emmen in a swirling stadium De Oude Meerdijk.”

FC Emmen chairman Ronald Lubbers added: “We already made an attempt to contract Maikel in the winter of 2020-2021. Unfortunately for us, ‘Kieft’ eventually made a nice transfer from Birmingham City to Millwall. Since then we have always kept in touch and are therefore happy that it has now worked out. With his experience, quality and role in the dressing room, Maikel will really add something.”
